Washington County Celebrates Completion of Wi-Fi Expansion Project with Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony

Wednesday, May 22, 2024, at noon, the Washington County Chamber of Commerce, along with county & city officials and representatives from participating businesses, held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the successful completion of the project construction around the squareThis has transformed it into a more pedestrian-friendly and aesthetically charming space, providing an enjoyable environment for everyone. The ceremony also marked the completion of a major Wi-Fi expansion project, bringing enhanced internet connectivity to key areas throughout the county.

"Connectivity is a concern for the community that REMC wanted to help with even though we do not provide power to the city. You will see one Gig coverage with 100 Mbps upload and download speeds," said Mark McKinney, CEO of Jackson County REMC. "This project started a little over two years ago and was made possible by the Washington County Community Foundation, Jackson County REMC, and the Washington County Commissioners," stated Mayor Justin Green. “Offering free Wi-Fi in our downtown is a great addition to Salem; not only for our residents but to all of our visitors. We have a vibrant business network on our square that will benefit as well. I hope many users will take advantage of this service and spend more time around the squareThis is another example of a team effort here in our community," Mayor Justin Green concluded.

Today is a day of immense pride for us all. The town square is now not only a comfortable place to stroll and shop but also a hub of connectivity. This development is a significant stride forward for our community, and we are excited to observe its impact.

This project represents a significant investment in Washington County's future. Reliable and accessible Wi-Fi is no longer a luxury; it's a necessity for businesses, residents, and visitors alike. This expansion project ensures that everyone has the tools they need to thrive in today's digital world. Not only is there coverage around the square, but also in Salem Walking Trail and Pekin Park, with open opportunities in the future!

Here's a glimpse into the exciting advantages our new free Wi-Fi on the square brings:

  • Convenience for All: Stay connected with loved ones, check emails, or browse the web – all for free! This Wi-Fi access point caters to residents and visitors alike.
  • Enhanced Shopping Experience: Imagine browsing online reviews or previewing restaurant menus while you shop at local stores. Free Wi-Fi empowers informed purchases and can lead to increased customer satisfaction.
  • A Boost for Local Businesses: Social media-savvy businesses can leverage Wi-Fi to attract customers and showcase their offerings online. This can lead to increased foot traffic and potential sales.
  • A Hub for Community Events: Organizers of events like Friday Night on the Square, car shows, or live music events can utilize the Wi-Fi to promote their events and enhance the overall experience for attendees.
  • Educational Opportunities: Students and curious minds can access a wealth of information right on the square, fostering lifelong learning and promoting a vibrant intellectual atmosphere.
  • Increased Tourist Appeal: Free Wi-Fi is a major perk for modern travelers. It allows them to stay connected, share their experiences, and find information about local attractions, potentially leading to longer stays and increased spending.

The free Wi-Fi on the square is more than just connectivity; it's a catalyst for growth, convenience, and a more vibrant community spirit!

We are grateful for the collaboration and support from all stakeholders involved in this project. This accomplishment demonstrates our collective commitment to promoting a vibrant and connected Washington County. "If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together," said Judy Johnson, Executive Director of the Washington County Community Foundation.

Special thanks to the partnering organizations without whom this project would not have been successful: Washington County Community Foundation; City of Salem; Regional Opportunity Initiatives; Jackson County REMC, and the Washington County Commissioners & employees.
